Inglewood Special Planning Commission Meeting: Full-motion digital billboards at Kia Forum

INGLEWOOD (SBE) – The Inglewood Planning Commission will hold a special meeting Wednesday, May 31, to make changes to the Sign Overlay Zone at the Kia Forum.

The applicant is requesting an amendment to the Sign Overlay Zone under a Master Sign Plan (MSP) which was established in 2013 under a development agreement when the property was under the ownership of Madison Square Garden (MSG).

The plan created the three-way digital billboards at the intersection of Manchester and Prairie.

The MSP “were permitted to display static images only with a refresh rate of no less than 8 seconds”.

The applicant is requesting to remove the refresh rate and establish full motion graphics.

Full-motion digital billboards are the new television. They are TVs that are larger than life, with attention-grabbing ads (often promoting streaming TV services themselves) that motorists cannot ignore. In essence, they’re giant TVs with no remote control for the viewer to turn off, fast forward or change the channel.

The full-motion digital billboards are already located in the downtown Inglewood area.

WOW Media, are major campaign donors to ALL Inglewood elected officials. They penned this article calling “full-motion” digital billboards the future.

In 2021, WOW Media put out a press release stating they would be placing a digital billboard at the intersection of LaBrea and Manchester which hasn’t come to fruition, yet.

“Reestablishing Inglewood as the sports and entertainment capital of the world is an ongoing collaborative effort between government leaders and private business, and WOW Media is proud to continue playing a prominent role in the revitalization,” Scott Krantz, WOW founder and president, said in the release. “Collaboration and customization is the new frontier for the outdoor industry and this unique partnership is another step toward fully realizing our shared vision for Inglewood’s future and the industry as a whole.”

WOW Media currently operates nearly two dozen digital billboards throughout the City.

Residents can send public comments to either Bernard McCrumby or Mindala Wilcox before the scheduled meeting. You can either watch the meeting on the city’s Facebook page or attend in person in council chambers.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
