David Roberts, who was promoted from within Carson’s city ranks, officially took over as City Manager in February 2022. Before his appointment, Roberts had served the city in various capacities, including as the Assistant City Manager and Director of Community Development.

His deep understanding of the city’s inner workings, cultivated over several years, positioned him as a natural choice for the role. This internal promotion was viewed favorably by both city officials and the community, as it underscored the city’s commitment to recognizing and elevating internal talent. The Mayor and City Council made the right choice by elevating him to the next level.

Upon assuming office, Roberts prioritized initiatives to enhance Carson’s growth, safety, and community well-being. These include a citywide rebranding and marketing project to modernize the city’s image, improve communication, and foster a sense of unity among residents and stakeholders. His leadership has also seen the implementation of a license plate reader program to bolster public safety, demonstrating his commitment to leveraging technology for the community’s benefit.

Roberts has worked to deepen partnerships with local institutions like California State University, Dominguez Hills. One key project stemming from this collaboration is the Carson Small Business Growth Academy, aimed at fostering local entrepreneurship and driving economic growth. Furthermore, under Roberts’ management, the city has seen a focused effort on fiscal responsibility. He has overseen the preparation of the city’s capital and operating budgets, coordinated grant applications, and facilitated affordable housing initiatives.

Programs such as the Commercial Facade Improvement Program and the Neighborhood Pride Program have been critical in revitalizing key areas and supporting local businesses and low-income homeowners. Roberts’ approach to governance also includes ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws, particularly in risk management. His office has implemented comprehensive safety programs and collaborated with various city departments to ensure workplace safety and compliance with regulations.

Additionally, his active role in the city’s legislative agenda has been essential in advocating for policies beneficial to Carson. Overall, David Roberts’ rise from within Carson’s city ranks to the role of City Manager has been characterized by a balanced and inclusive approach to leadership. His focus on modernization, community engagement, fiscal responsibility, and public safety reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at fostering growth, resilience, and a strong sense of community in Carson.

His leadership continues to position Carson as a forward-looking city, ready to meet future challenges while maintaining a strong connection to its roots.
