Leading California Congressional Candidate Proposes Federal Legislation to Ban Guns at Polling Places

Mike Feuer is proposing federal legislation to prohibit guns at polling places whenever there is a federal question on the ballot.

“In any democracy worthy of the name, guns don’t belong at polling places. Americans have the right to be free from intimidation and the specter of gun violence when they exercise their right to vote,” said Feuer. “If Congress does not enact this legislation before I take office, I will introduce it myself,”

Feuer continued, adding that he would make an exception for professional public law enforcement officials performing duties at polling places.

Feuer’s proposed nationwide ban follows last week’s passage by the Texas House of Representatives of a bill to allow election judges and many poll workers to carry guns at polling places. Feuer believes this outrageous legislation is a direct threat to our democracy—and is concerned that absent a federal prohibition, the Texas bill could spark similar laws in other states.

As Co-founder and Former Co-Chair of Prosecutors Against Gun Violence, Feuer is a nationally recognized leader in the effort to prevent gun violence across America, and his extensive record of achievement as a public servant is unmatched among his competitors in the race for Congress. A staunch defender of democracy, Mike wrote California’s Same-Day Voter Registration Law in response to voter suppression efforts. He has also fought to protect marginalized communities by challenging Trump Administration efforts to undermine the Census and DACA and make the LAPD complicit in civil immigration enforcement.

Feuer’s other notable achievements include his work to confront the climate crisis, expand access to healthcare, protect consumers, and stand up for women’s reproductive rights. He has led landmark litigation against Wells Fargo, written key laws to advance environmental protection, and enforced the FACT Act to require crisis pregnancy centers to inform patients of their full reproductive options. Feuer has also been a vocal advocate for seniors and the LGBTQ community, fighting for marriage equality and targeting anti-LGBTQ hate and discrimination.
