INGLEWOOD (SBE) – Inglewood Parking & Traffic Commissioner Brett Roberts was sworn in to the El Camino College Board of Trustees on May 12.

The El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees made a provisional appointment for Roberts to serve as the Area One Trustee until the next regularly scheduled election for Governing Board members on November 5, 2024.

Mr. Roberts’ provisional appointment becomes permanent 30 days from May 12, unless a petition calling for a special election containing a sufficient number of signatures is filed in the office of the county superintendent of schools within that time frame.

Roberts applied to fill the unexpired term of the late Ken Brown who died in late March.

The term ends November 2024.

Roberts was sworn in by Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. who he developed a close working relationship as a community relations representative for Metro on the K-Line projects.

Roberts spoke with the ECC Union, the colleges student run newspaper about his appointment.

“When the opportunity, I’ll say unfortunately, arose I knew that it had to be filled by someone,” Roberts said. “With everything I’ve been doing recently [it] would put me in a position to be able to add value, contribute from day one, so I took a stab at it.”

Roberts plans to create more synergy between the college and Inglewood Unified School District to encourage more students to attend.

“I want our IUSD kids to look at El Camino and know that this a place that’s for them and it’s right in their backyard. It can be integral to their success just like Santa Monica College was for me,” Roberts said. “So if I can do that, that’s great.”

Inglewood Unified will be holding commencement ceremonies for its senior graduates at Marsee Auditorium in El Camino College on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. The graduation ceremonies will take place at the following times: MHS at 9:00 a.m., CHIPS at 1:00 p.m., and IHS at 5:00 p.m.
