A proposal to make landlords’ tax breaks contingent on rent limits has drawn industry pushback, progressive applause and some alternative approaches. By Talmon Joseph Smith | NY Times When the Biden administration laid out a suite of plans this week to address housing affordability, it added a bold update to previous proposals — and sent the housing industry and the economics world buzzing. The White House called on Congress to pass legislation giving “corporate landlords” — defined by the White House as those with over 50 rental units — a choice to cap annual rent increases on existing units at 5 percent annually…

WASHINGTON – CBS and Jezebel reported on new DLCC research highlighting the deadly consequences of Republican abortion bans around an already pressing epidemic: Black maternal mortality rates. Black pregnant mothers and babies in the U.S. die at the highest rates across all racial demographics. And the disparities are alarming: Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. The majority of Black Americans live in states that ban abortions, so they face the compounding impacts of medical racism and deadly abortion bans. Studies show that racial inequities in infant mortality are most severe…
By Zariah Walker In California, getting caught stealing a $5 box of cereal equates to a misdemeanor that is punishable by a maximum of three years probation, up to six months in jail and a maximum fine of $1000. If a person cannot afford a $5 box of cereal to feed their children or themselves, how are they supposed to afford a $1000 fine, as well as missing 6 months of work from a job that doesn’t pay enough for them to buy a $5 box of cereal? The punishment for petty theft can be disproportionate to the crime itself…

Deputies located the Crown Victoria in question Thursday and arrested Steven…
By Grace Toohey Now searching for a new owner: Downtown Los Angeles high-rise rich in colorful anecdotes from its history, albeit most quite haunting. Offers units overlooking Skid Row, many stubbornly vacant. Best known for the Netflix series about the dead body found in a water tank on its roof. The building is the infamous Cecil Hotel, which was transformed in recent years into a privately funded supportive-housing complex for the formerly homeless. A new owner wouldn’t technically acquire the property at 640 S. Main Street but would instead take over the 99-year ground lease, which allows its long-term use…
By Ashley Ahn Name-checked by Nipsey Hussle and other rappers — “This is how we ball … Slauson Mall” — the hulking green warehouse-like building is a place to get a suit and tie, 7-inch platform shoes, wigs, bejeweled tooth decorations or a custom R.I.P. shirt to commemorate a deceased loved one. It’s often called a swap meet, but the stalls are like small stores, with permanent walls and shelves, where a customer can not only dress and accessorize head to toe but also get a manicure and a tattoo, haggling over prices to get a good deal. The food court…
By Alexis Wince Picture this: Scrolling through the park and listening to African-inspired music, witnessing the colorful murals on every corner, and the smell of soul food in the air; this is a typical weekend in Leimert Park, now facing challenges. In recent years, the landscape of Leimert Park has undergone drastic changes marked by a surge in property values and new neighborhood developments. However, these changes have come at a cost as black business owners and residents find themselves increasingly displaced as they can not keep pace with the rising expenses. As this issue escalates, there is a genuine…

We want to give voters and community members the opportunity to hear directly from us, the candidates who wish to represent residents of…
