SYLMAR – A 21-year-old woman was in custody Friday for allegedly driving a vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian in Sylmar a week ago. Mary Inez Mercado of Granada Hills was arrested on Thursday and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. GARDENA – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a driver in Gardena Thursday evening. The Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters responded to Cerise and Rosecrans avenues at around 8:45 p.m. after receiving reports about a person struck by a vehicle, authorities said. Paramedics performed lifesaving measures, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead. The accident prompted street closures.

LOS ANGELES – A man who was escorted off a Metro B (Red) Line train for suspected possession of drug paraphernalia was arrested Thursday after he allegedly became combative and bit off a portion of a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant’s finger. LOS ANGELES – Metro’s Board of Directors Thursday approved allocating $20 million to extend its GoPass fareless pilot program for students from kindergarten through community college through June 2024. VAN NUYS – Thirteen people were arrested at a Van Nuys-area motel for allegedly taking part in a fraud and identity theft ring that police said stole millions of dollars in state welfare funds, authorities said Thursday.
