LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced two appointments to the Board of Police Commissioners Tuesday, along with a deputy mayor of public safety. Brian K. Williams, currently the executive director of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Oversight Commission, will serve as deputy mayor of public safety, overseeing agencies that include the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department. LOS ANGELES – UCLA students were urged to be on alert Tuesday as police continued searching for a suspect who tried to rob and possibly kidnap three students in campus parking garages. According to UCLA police, the first attack occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday near Parking Structure 1. The man demanded money, attempted to kidnap the victim, held her hands together, and refused to let go. The suspect claimed he had a gun, but the victim did not actually see a weapon, police said. LONG BEACH, Calif. – Authorities Tuesday identified a 90-year-old woman who was fatally injured when the car she was driving crashed in a Long Beach parking lot, damaging four other vehicles and injuring two pedestrians. Officers were dispatched at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday to Spring Street and Palo Verde Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department reported. LOS ANGELES – A City Council committee recommended eliminating the COVID-19 testing requirement for unvaccinated Los Angeles city employees Tuesday. Currently, city employees who are not vaccinated against the virus must receive an exemption and undergo weekly testing. Under a resolution recommended by the committee, the testing requirement would end, but the vaccination mandate would remain unchanged. City staff, however, told the committee that the city was in the process of granting exemptions for unvaccinated employees to return to work.
