LOS ANGELES – An overwhelming majority of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s more than 30,000 cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, special education assistants and other essential school workers have voted to authorize a strike if necessary to resolve stalled contract negotiations, officials with Service Employees International Union Local 99 announced. Employees cast their votes from Jan 23 to Feb. 10 at hundreds of schools, special education centers, early education centers, bus yards and nutrition centers as well as online. LOS ANGELES – A man in his 30s was shot dead Sunday morning by a gunman in the Westlake community of Los Angeles, authorities said. The shooting occurred at 12:16 a.m. Sunday in the area of Lucas Avenue and Ingraham Street, the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Division reported. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the gunman fled the location in an unknown direction. No description was immediately available.

LOS ANGELES – There were no tickets sold with all six numbers in the latest drawing of the multi-state Powerball lottery and the estimated jackpot for Monday’s drawing is expected to grow to $45 million. One ticket with five numbers, but missing the Powerball number, was sold in Pennsylvania and is worth $1 million, the Multi-State Lottery Association, which conducts the game, announced. LOS ANGELES – The number of COVID-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals is holding steady, rising by eight people to 697, according to the latest state figures. Of those patients hospitalized as of Saturday, 69 were being treated in intensive care, down from 70 the previous day. DANA POINT – A person was killed Sunday when a vehicle overturned, flipping onto its roof on the San Diego (5) Freeway in Dana Point, authorities said. The crash on the northbound freeway, just south of Camino De Estrella, occurred about 2 a.m. and involved at least three other vehicles, the California Highway Patrol reported. SEAL BEACH – A crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach Saturday evening sent five people to trauma centers. The crash was reported at 7:14 p.m. on Pacific Coast Highway at Main Street, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Sean Doran. All five trauma patients got out of one of the vehicles before firefighters arrived, Doran said. Ambulances from Seal Beach and Huntington Beach took the patients to trauma centers for treatment, he said.

WOODLAND HILL – A three-vehicle crash in Woodland Hills Saturday evening sent six people to hospitals. The crash was reported at 6:25 p.m. in the 5900 block of North Topanga Canyon Boulevard, near Califa Street and Warner Center Park, said the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Nicholas Prange. The crash caused airbags to be deployed in all three vehicles, Prange said. One patient was hospitalized in critical condition, one in moderate condition and four in fair condition, he said. The identities of the patients were not available, Prange said.
