A message from L.A. City Council president Marqueece Harris-Dawson: Drive responsibly and keep each other safe

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week, four families experienced the loss of a loved one because of a traffic accident. These tragic incidents occurred on Normandie Avenue at 66th Street, San Pedro Street and 98th Street, South Main Street at 74th Street and 104th Street and Figueroa Street.

If you have a camera on your home or business in the area, please review the footage, and if there is any information that might help the investigators identify the drivers, send any relevant footage to the investigators.

To our drivers, heed all traffic laws and stay off your phone. If you are in a traffic incident and someone is hurt, stop your vehicle, help render aid, and call 9-1-1. If something does happen and you are the driver, please stop and render aid. The court will treat you more harshly if you do not.

To our pedestrians and cyclists, please stay alert on our streets, and when crossing the roads, take a break from the phone and make sure you see drivers, and they see you.

The theft of copper wire from streetlights across the city has impacted our streets and neighborhoods, and we are doing everything possible to address this issue. While my team and I fight to solve the lighting problem, I ask everyone to drive slower and keep their eyes on the road, not the phone. And, if anything happens, stop and help.

Let’s do what we can to take care of each other and stay safe.

With hope and unity,
Marqueece Harris-Dawson
