This weekend I had the chance to take my daughters and cousins to the Black College Expo which is an annual event that takes place in various cities across the United States, including Inglewood, California.

This expo is a vital platform that provides a unique opportunity for students, particularly those from underrepresented communities, to connect with historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), as well as other institutions of higher learning. I will discuss the importance of the Expo in the area and how it has been making a positive impact on the lives of students and families in the region.
The Black College Expo was founded in 1999 by Dr. Theresa Price, a renowned educator and advocate for higher education. The expo was created to address the growing concern about the lack of diversity in higher education and to provide a platform for students from underrepresented communities to access information and resources about HBCUs and other colleges and universities. The expo’s primary purpose is to promote higher education, career opportunities, and cultural awareness among African American students, as well as students from other underrepresented groups.

Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played a crucial role in the history of American higher education. These institutions were established during the era of segregation to provide educational opportunities to African Americans, who were otherwise excluded from attending predominantly white institutions. Today, HBCUs continue to serve as a vital pipeline for students from underrepresented communities to access higher education and pursue careers in various fields. HBCUs are known for their strong academic programs, cultural richness, and commitment to social justice and community engagement.
The Black College Expo in our area is one of the largest and most popular events of its kind in the country. The expo attracts thousands of students, parents, and educators from the Los Angeles area and beyond. The event features a wide range of activities, including college fairs, career workshops, financial aid seminars, and entertainment performances. Students can meet with representatives from over 50 HBCUs and other colleges and universities, as well as learn about scholarship opportunities, internships, and career paths. Some schools even gave on the spot acceptance.
The Black College Expo has had a profound impact on the lives of students and families in the region. Many students who have attended the expo have gone on to attend HBCUs and other colleges and universities, pursuing careers in fields such as medicine, law, engineering, and education. The expo has also helped to increase diversity and inclusion in higher education, providing opportunities for students from underrepresented communities to access higher education and pursue their dreams. California not having any HBCU’s it important for children to see the culture that an HBCU can provide.

As a Southern University and A&M College alumni and legacy, I am honored to be part of a rich and storied tradition of academic excellence, cultural heritage, and community pride. For generations, my family has been connected to this esteemed institution, and I am proud to carry on the legacy of my ancestors who walked the same halls. As I reflect on my time at Southern University, I am reminded of the lasting impact that this institution has had on my life. The lessons I learned, the relationships I formed, and the experiences I had have shaped me into the person I am today. I am proud to be part of a legacy that values education, community, and excellence, and I am committed to carrying on this tradition for generations to come.
To ensure the continued success and impact of the Black College Expo in Los Angeles, I recommend the following:
- Increase Funding: Secure additional funding to support the expo, including sponsorships, grants, and donations.
- Expand Outreach: Expand outreach efforts to reach more students and families in the Los Angeles area, particularly those from underrepresented communities.
- Parental Supervision: By Being present and engaged, you can help your student stay focused, motivated, and committed to their goals. Parental supervision is not just about oversight; it’s about empowerment. It’s about giving your child the tools, support, and confidence they need to succeed.
- Business Casual Dress Code: A dress code also helps to promote a sense of unity and cohesion among attendees, creating a more focused and productive environment for networking and learning. By dressing professionally, students can take the first step towards presenting themselves as confident, capable, and college-ready individuals.
By working together to support and promote the Black College Expo in the Los Angeles area, we can help to create a more diverse and inclusive higher education landscape, providing opportunities for all students!
