The City Council this week approved draft language for ordinances that would allow and regulate cannabis business operations in Redondo. It’s a step toward having two dispensaries open in the city.
The panel voted 4-1, with Councilmember Scott Behrendt dissenting, to approve the draft language. Behrendt has lobbied against dispensaries opening in the city, especially in his District 5, which, he said, is already saturated with liquor stores and smoke shops.
Two of the ordinances, if approved, would allow marijuana dispensaries to operate in inland and coastal areas of the city, and the third one would set regulatory standards for those businesses, including requiring a commercial cannabis permit; and meeting certain criteria such as providing security and safety plans, submitting records of compliance at previous locations and staying compatible with the neighborhood the businesses are in or around.
“We took those experiences with those unlawful dispensaries and cracked down in drafting these ordinances, making sure these places have security plans and that they don’t have a detrimental effect on the environment around them,” Councilmember Zein Obagi said. “What we’re trying to do here is get something legal going that generates revenue that we can reinvest into public safety for our youth to stay away from cannabis.”
