After a months-long campaign by the residents of Ladera Heights, View Park and Windsor Hills – three, long-established, predominantly African-American communities on the westside of Los Angeles – to secure an in-person meeting with LA County to address the devastating impacts of the recently-released Draft Westside Area Plan (“WSAP”) on their neighborhoods, the County has finally relented.
A large turnout is expected for the community meeting, now scheduled for August 1, 2024 at 6:00 pm at Knox Presbyterian Church, 5840 La Tijera Blvd, Los Angeles, CA.
As drafted, the County’s current zoning proposals would dramatically alter the character and livability of these three communities, which would be required to bear the brunt of the County’s upzoning, while nearby communities would be only lightly impacted or completely spared any increased density.
“Our community recognizes there is a need for additional workforce and affordable housing throughout the LA region,” according to Tracie Lyons, former president of Ladera Heights Civic Association (“LHCA”), who is heading up Ladera Heights’ response to the WSAP. “However, this Plan calls for an inappropriate and shockingly inequitable allocation of high density in our neighborhood while completely exempting several less diverse westside neighborhoods from any increased density, and fails to address – or even consider – the negative impact that increased traffic, pollution and lack of a reliable transportation network will have on the character of our neighborhood and our quality of life.”
