INGLEWOOD – Another man was fatally shot in Inglewood Oct. 24.
Inglewood Police Department officers responded to a shots fired call around 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of Venice Way and Victor Avenue where they found two victims.
One man was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition.
Jose Cubillos, 29, of Los Angeles died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. The other man was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.
A witness spoke to a videographer off-camera and said they heard the shots and then saw a vehicle leave the scene and hit an innocent driver before watching the suspects flee on foot.
Authorities also located a two-vehicle collision, a block away at Glenway Drive and Victor Ave, that could be related to the shooting.
There has been no comment from either Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts or Chief of Police Mark Fronterotta on the latest shooting in the City
This is the second shooting in Inglewood with multiple victims this month.
On Oct. 7, five men were shot will sitting in their vehicle in the 3300 block of Manchester Blvd. Two of them succumbed to their injuries.
Mayor Butts described the shooting as “targeted” and said police were actively searching for surveillance footage.
During the Oct. 24 regular city council meeting, the City approved an agreement with Leverage Information Systems Inc. for $190,000 for annual maintenance for over 500 surveillance cameras installed throughout the City.
Surveillance cameras were alleged to have caught a murder of Andrew Summerfield in one of the City’s parks on Jan. 5, 2021, but the City failed to release any descriptions of the suspects and/or their vehicles to the public to assist with the investigation.
His murder remains unsolved.
According to publicly available records, the City has stopped publishing crime stats since 2019 and have stopped the Police Oversight Commission meetings in 2016 after Inglewood police fatally shot a couple sleeping in their car.
Residents continue to ask for evening meetings to discuss public safety issues which the mayor is vehemently against.
“When I was first elected the city council meetings were a clown show, and investors watch these meetings to gauge investing in the City and I won’t go back to that,” said Butts during the Oct. 24 meeting.
Butts suggested that residents bring their concerns to Town Hall meetings which have only been conducted by two councilmembers this year by Councilwomen Gloria Gray and Dionne Faulk.
“Councilwoman Gray holds office hours once a week,” said Butts.
Councilmen Eloy Morales Jr. and Alex Padilla have suggested residents bring their concerns to City events as opposed to an organized meeting where the police department is also present.
Residents have come to city council meetings in the past stating that city events aren’t the proper forum to discuss city business.
