SAN JOSE, Calif. (SBE) – As a result of over 1,000 city job positions unfilled, hundreds of city workers plan to rally at SJC Airport on Tuesday, June 13th, starting at noon.
This rally will feature union members and city workers who keep the city and our airport running. SJC is the Bay Area’s second-busiest airport by passenger boarding, and it is one of many city worksites adversely impacted by extreme levels of short staffing.
“My colleagues and the entire Airport Department provide a safe and on-time experience for our South Bay residents traveling in and out of SJC. We work around the clock and we are continuously analyzing and determining methods and metrics to improve the traveling experience for all,” said John Tran, Airport Operations Supervisor at San Jose Mineta International Airport, and Staff Up San Jose Union Member. “Without a fully staffed Airport Department, South Bay residents will need to travel more than an hour to San Francisco or Oakland to fly out of the Bay area. The vacancy crisis has impacted all of our staff positions, as well as management positions and the future succession of these roles. This condition has not subsided – yet, here at the airport, we have observed an increase of passenger activities almost reaching pre-pandemic levels. If the City wants to maintain a safe and robust air travel option for South Bay residents, then it must secure staffing support now.”
