In the realm of California politics, it is disheartening to witness a recurring pattern of elected officials abandoning their current seats to pursue other political positions or offices. This behavior not only leaves constituents without representation but also places an unnecessary financial burden on Californian taxpayers to fund special elections.
This issue is particularly significant in Los Angeles, where gatekeeping, especially among Black politicians, further exacerbates the lack of genuine representation.
Speculation arises as to whether emerging voices like Darryn Harris are encouraged to wait their turn, despite established politicians holding office for extended periods.
When elected officials choose to leave their seats mid-term for personal political aspirations, it disrupts the continuity of representation and undermines the trust placed in them by their constituents. This departure leaves the people they were elected to serve without an advocate and necessitates the costly process of organizing special elections.
Taxpayer money, which could have been allocated to essential services and programs, are diverted to fund these additional elections. This cycle of elected officials using their positions as steppingstones not only disengages voters but also erodes faith in the democratic process.
Los Angeles, a city celebrated for its diversity, faces an additional challenge when it comes to
gatekeeping. The presence of long-standing politicians can limit opportunities for emerging
Black leaders to access positions of influence and decision-making power. While experience is valuable, it is imperative to foster an environment that encourages new voices and perspectives to contribute meaningfully to the political landscape.
After careful consideration, I decided to defer running for office. Nevertheless, my commitment to fighting for higher wages, affordable housing, building an economy from the bottom up, and criminal justice reform remains unwavering. Thanks for all your support. It means a lot.

The recent dropout of Darryn Harris from the race raises speculation about the existence of
gatekeeping practices. It prompts us to question whether established politicians, who have held office for an extended period, advised Harris to “wait his turn” before seeking a higher position. While seniority and institutional knowledge have their merits, it is vital to ensure that emerging leaders from underrepresented communities have equal opportunities to participate and shape the policies that impact their lives.
To establish a more inclusive political environment in California, we must challenge the status quo of elected officials using their positions as stepping stones. Genuine representation demands elected officials who prioritize the needs and aspirations of their constituents over personal ambitions. We must support candidates who demonstrate a commitment to accountability, transparency, and the fair representation of all Californians.
In the upcoming elections, let us carefully scrutinize the actions and records of candidates. We should encourage those who actively work to dismantle gatekeeping practices and promote inclusive decision-making. By electing representatives who genuinely prioritize their constituents’ well-being, we can break the cycle of politicians abandoning their seats for personal gain and ensure that taxpayer money is spent on serving the needs of the community rather than funding frequent special elections.
It is time for a new era of California politics, one that values accountability, inclusivity, and true representation. By collectively challenging gatekeeping and supporting emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds, we can foster a political landscape that uplifts all Californians and reflects the vibrant tapestry of our state.
