WILMINGTON – Authorities sought the public’s help Monday to find the hit-and-run motorist they say left the scene of a pedestrian fatality in Wilmington.

Paramedics sent to Pacific Coast Highway at Wilmington Boulevard about 5:20 p.m. Sunday pronounced the 52-year-old man dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Information on his identity was not immediately available.

The man was walking north across PCH “against a solid red light, in a marked crosswalk” when he was hit by a Scion xB that was westbound on PCH, police said. The driver of the Scion stopped at the scene and tried to help the injured man, police said.

“Immediately after the first collision, an unknown vehicle was traveling westbound on Pacific Coast Highway and collided with the pedestrian who had already been lying on the roadway,” police said in a statement. “The second vehicle that collided with the pedestrian fled the scene.”

The second vehicle was described only as possibly a dark-colored sedan. No description was released of that motorist, who was being sought, police said.

A standing reward of up to $50,000 has been offered by the city of Los Angeles for information that helps solve a fatal hit-and-run.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the LAPD South Traffic Division at 323-421-2500, or the police tipline at 877-LAPD-247. Tipsters may also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or use the website lacrimestoppers.org.
