`Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ Opens to $8.2M to Lead Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES – “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” opened to $8.2 million this weekend to top the North American box office chart, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

The third in a trilogy of films starring Channing Tatum as a male stripper is screening in fewer theaters than the previous two movies, but its per-screen average of $5,467 is higher than 2012’s “Magic Mike” and 2015’s “Magic Mike XXL.”

The next two spots were taken by films directed by James Cameron — 25 years apart. “Avatar: The Way of Water” was second with $6.8 million in its ninth week in theaters in the United States and Canada.

Third place went to a silver anniversary re-release of 1997’s “Titanic,” which brought in $6.4 million Friday through Sunday, Comscore reported. “Titanic” was originally released in December 1997 and went on to become the highest-grossing movie in history, though it was eventually surpassed by Cameron’s 2009 “Avatar” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” due in part to higher ticket prices.

The older-skewing comedy “80 for Brady” was fourth with $6 million in its second week, followed by “Knock at the Cabin,” which grossed $5.5 million one week after opening in first place.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” ($5.5 million), “A Man Called Otto” ($2.62 million), “Missing” ($2.6 million), “M3GAN” ($2.3 million) and “Plane” ($1.1 million).
